Target Audience Research

A questionnaire was filled in by my peers which are all consisting of my target market, and overall I was very happy with the success.

The target audience could all identify my music genre, all stated they could see synergy either from the font or the colours. The target audience could all notice and interpret the signs of the tattoo, make up and jewellery, and the Indian outfit. They also guessed the target audience correctly of being teenagers to young adults, of both genders and and all ethnicity. The representations that the target audience noticed was also successful as cultural and both traditional and modern. The language they stated was a mixture of formal and informal.

For improvements, I was overall satisfied. The only suggestions I had was different fonts on my contents and a puff which I took on board and added to my contents. The other suggestion was to make the lines on the front cover the same size and change a colour of a puff, Which I also then altered.

My model unfortunately backed out extremely last minute which was very disappointing.

I am late posting this plan, but the shoot went extremely well. I wanted to portray the model as an up and coming new musician, that was very confident in himself. I feel this shoot went extremely well.

These are my favourite photos I captured from my cousins wedding in October. I will use these images on my contents page.

I adore this shot of the Gurdwara that my cousin got married in, the bright colours look extremely beautiful and I feel it really captures the culture perfectly. I want the readers of my magazine to also feel the culture, and be interested in the images I am showing them and wish they had the full magazine so they could find out more about the stories which are shown on the contents page.

Plannning: Photo Shoot 1

As the Indian event Diwali was approaching, I felt that if I was to go to the Gurdwara and ask politely of family and friends if i could take a few shots of them, As I felt this would look amazing on my contents page.

However unfortunately, due to the protest in India and sikhs being treated unfairly. This year British Indians called for a "Black Diwali" to show respect to those Sikhs who have died in India.

I was aware of these events however still expected I was aloud to take images of the area and the scenery. But they informed me I was not aloud to take pictures of anything.

I was disappointed with the outcome, although I did understanding the reasoning to this situation.

However I will still be incorporating the festival of Diwali in my double page spread and use candles to signify the ritual in my nest photo shoot.

Research: Planning font

I found this beautiful font online and I hope to use this style as my masthead and feature this on my front cover, the contents and the dps. 

Photo planning.

I went to a couple of weddings in the summer and this my own photography. These two are my favourite picture and i hope to use these images in my magazine, probably in my contents page as I am aware they will not be a good enough quality to use as a double page or a front cover image. 

I love the elegance in the first picture as the stair case and the bride lifting her dress for her sister to apply her shoes is extremely beautiful.

 I adore the second image also as it shows the beautiful henna which I originally wanted to incorporate in my magazine. I feel the jewellry, the make up and the outfit all look stunning in the image and extremely glamorous.

How research has influenced my planning

If my target audience research had disagreed o any of my ideas then I would have edited it and lined through my planning, but thankfully they have all agreed with my ideas. 

This has influenced my creativity and planning as I particularly liked the synergy they used to promote Q and how their subtle effect of colour or stating “tells Q” as I find that very effective and an intelligent way of promoting the magazine but not in an obvious way, I will also use these similar effects on my magazine double page spread. However I will link it to my genre and my target audience of Bhangra and to young adults of those from the Asian culture and those who are not. I will use an image similar to this one, as I feel it is very modern and the colour red is very traditional in the Indian culture and the wedding day is a huge ceremony for Asians.

This has influenced my creativity planning as I feel the article layout is very effective and the standfirst and pull quotes make the reader want to read the article. I will use these features when it comes to my article however link it to my own genre of Bhangra and my target audience of young adults and use a brighter image similar to this.

This influences my creativity and planning as I want all of my image, title and article to link together very clearly and I want the representation to be very clear and the attitude of the double page spread to be very evident. Due to my genre being Bhangra and not rock, I would use a similar layout however brighter colours and a different image.

Although I am not doing a Jazz genre and I am doing Bhangra I will use this research to provide me with ideas. For example I like the organisation of this contents page and the two columns clearly states if the articles are regulars in this magazine or features. I would use an image similar to this to display my genre better as it uses red, which is a traditional Indian colour, and the bracelets also show the culture.

The masthead is san serif, which also shows elegance. The use of the gold with the shine ruining through will suit my front cover. I will ensure my masthead consists of one colourful, because I am assuming that my front cover will consist of a more variety of colours that is shown on this cover therefore I do not want my colours to clash to much.  I will also enlarge the first letter of the masthead as this magazine has done as I feel it is very effective in being eye catching. 

Due to this research I will ensure I use the same fonts and colours on the contents page as I have in the cover. This will cause synergy. I will also not use contrasting images and have the same type of representations shown throughout. 

I shall ensure my image is manipulated enough so that it as noticeable and sharp as the Hello magazine has be, I shall also ensure the image of the artist overlaps the masthead slightly as I feel this helps emphasise the importance of the image. 

I love the coordination of the colours of red and black throughout the whole cover, and how it links in with the prop. This research has also made me consider the use of a crop as it adds more authenticity. I think the puff is extremely effective on this cover and I feel this is due too the overlap of the black on a red. I will definitely use two clashing colours on my puff on my magazine cover.

Research: Double page spread #3

This is a double page spread from a Q magazine. There are four columns of text across this double page spread and doesn’t fill the page width and there are about 2 cm space between columns. The text is san serif and is black written on a white background with deformed rectangle around the text, the box-out. The headline is contrasting and is white and is written in san serif and the background is black and is over lapping the image. There is a pull quote  written in red. And is located on the left side of the double page spread at the bottom, it clearly differs from the body of the text as it is much larger, bolder and is written in red making it much more noticeable. The speech marks are the same size as the quote. Drop capitals occur once and the “T” covers 12 lines of the text and is very bold and prominent. There is also a stand first and is located on the left side of the double page spread and is at the start of the article. The main body of text is size 10. The shot is a wide long shot and captures all of the artists or “kings” and shows the environment they work in with their instruments and the lighting around them. This image compliments the article as it shows the Kings of Leon visually on their return in which they are describing in their magazine. This links to Hodge & Kress genre theory as this is exactly how the consumer would imagine the band to be in their natural habitat with the dark colours, and the electronic instruments. This image suits the target audience as it is casual clothing and none are making eye contact so it is a very real shot which is what the target audience would want to see.

The things that indicate house style to me are the colours used, which are very similar to Qs logo, also in the stand first they state “…they tell Q” and there is also a banner in the top left corner promoting Q magazine. Another feature I notices was the strapline, as it stated “sneak peek” which is exactly what a strapline is usually effective of doing, however in this incident it is used to promote and intrigue the reader on their soon approaching album.

  

A detail I noticed is that they have made in very evident and noticeable in the shot of having a USA flag taking up a lot of space in the image, however are being advertised in a British magazine and will have British readers. This shows to me that kings of leon want to be promoted everywhere and get their fans across the world intrigued on their album and their return, but also do not want to forget their home town and their roots along the way. This flag also helps the colours work together in the article.

Research: Double page spread #2

This magazine name is Classic rock and was issued on August 2013. The double page spread starts on page 50. There are three columns of text. The text does not fill the page width and the space width between the columns is about 1cm, the text is also left aligned. The body of the text is serif and is black, which is very simplistic and natural, which I feel links to the image as he is in a natural setting. The headline of the font is serif and is navy blue and is extremely large.

There is a pull quote and Drop capitals are present twice in this article, the “J” takes up 13 lines, and the “I” takes up less of 5 lines. There is also a stand first on which is located on the left side. The size of the body of the text is 10. The shot of the image is a medium long shot, and all the colours are very muted and simplistic. This image compliments the article as Stephen Stills is described as the “highest paid rock stars on the planet” which is very ironic as we expect rock artists to be dressed in black and have make up and show anger and individuality, however this artist looks very normal and regular and is dressed in casual clothing of blue jeans and isn’t wearing any make up to look false.

So therefore this image doesn’t particularly suit the target audience of rock fans as they will not expect this in a rock magazine. This shows Neales genre theory or “repetition and difference as this image and article is challenging conventions and is spicing it up. The image shot is also out doors in natural scenery and normal rock shots are usually in studios with artificial lighting, and in this image there is no noticeable editing from photo shop. There is nothing on this page that indicates housestyle. A detail I noticed is how the blue jeans matches perfectly to the title, and this is the only editing I have noticed at the bottom of the left side of the page, I feel pull quotes are very effective and intriguing so I will certainly be using one on my double page spread. The font is the same on the pull quote however is bold and enlarged to make it more noticeable. The speech marks are the same size as the quote.

There is quite a lot of white space present, as there is a big amount of space between the stand first and pull quote. The article is about the artist Stephen Hills and his latest opinion and being reflective, the language relates to the target audience as it is casual register and has complex sentences which links to an older audience which are educated. However the article also consists of bad language which suggests younger audience too.

Research: Double Page spread #1

This is Q magazine and this double page spread started on Page 54. There are two columns of text on the left side of the double page spread, therefore the text doesn’t fill a lot of the page and probably is about 20% of it. This is due to the image covering the whole right side of the double page spread, and the majority of the left side is covered by the title. This layout has been effective as it has caught the readers eye, and the sans serif font of the title being very messy and rushed links into the title stating “THIS IS WHO I AM” they work very well together, as it is very aggressive and the underlining of the word “this” reinforces the individuality and forces people to accept. The black shows the anger and the power in the title, which is also what the model on the right side of the double page spread is wearing. Similar to the font of the title, the model is also carrying a sign with a rushed black font on it.

The column has around 1 cm distance from each other, which I feel is very suitable since if they were any bigger it would be a waste of space as the double page spread already consists of very little text. This article lacks pull quotes, cross lines, drop capitals, I feel this is the reason that the reader is not interested in the text and is not attracted to it, therefore I will definitely include these in my double page spread to interest the reader. The font seems to be at 10 and all the speech marks are the same size of the text. The shot is a long shot of a female holding a sign saying “FIGHT TRANSPHOBIA”, this links to the article and the title as it is screaming aggression to those who are unaccepting. This links to Stuart Hall’s representation theory as representation cannot possibly be a fixed unchangeable notion, as presented here society is changing.

This image suits the target audience as the model is wearing black which is very stereotypical of rock fans to wear, and to have dark eye makeup and to have a sultry look on her face. The model is declining Lauren Mulvey’s male gaze as she is clearly not dressing for men as she is covered in black and looks angry which isnt to impress men, as many rock fans do not do anything to impress the opposite sex. The shot is taken outdoors with natural light and is very pure which I feel adds meaning to the article and the representation they are portraying, there are no obvious photo shopping either.

The only thing on the page that indicates house style to me is the red box as this is the only thing with colour on the page and uses the same style shaping and colour as the magazines masthead of Q. A detail I noticed is the way the word “who” from the title actually overlaps on to the background of the image, this connotes to me that they are actually making a mark and a statement as it is linking to graffiti. This also connotes to me just how significant this article is and how they want to make a permanent impact on the reader, just as graffiti does on a wall.

There is not a lot of white space however there is a lot of grey space as the background of the image is on a grey background. The grey matches the black and the black is stereotypically known and to be linked with rock, which links to Hartleys theory of genre, which states it is an agent of ideological closure.

This influences my creativity and planning as I want all of my image, title and article to link together very clearly and I want the representation to be very clear and the attitude of the double page spread to be very evident. Due to my genre being bhangra and not rock, I would use a similar layout however brighter colours and a different image. Perhaps similar to the one below, as this represents my genre much clearer.
